Job Description :

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Project Design and Planning

  • Lead the design of WASH and other infrastructure projects, including spring rehabilitation, rainwater harvesting systems, classrooms, toilet construction, and other school construction infrastructures.
  • Develop technical drawings, specifications, and designs for spring rehabilitation, classrooms, toilets and other school infrastructures, and rainwater harvesting structures, including artificial roofs and large water tanks.
  • Ensure all designs comply with the Kenya Building Code, sensitive to local geographical and social dynamics, environmental standards, and best practices in water conservation and management.
  • Conduct site assessments to determine the most appropriate and sustainable solutions for each location.
  • Coordinate application and securing of applicable permits and licenses.

Bill of Quantities (BoQ) Preparation

  • Prepare detailed Bills of Quantities (BoQs) for all construction projects, ensuring accuracy and adherence to project budgets.
  • Work closely with procurement and finance teams to ensure timely contracting of contractors needed for construction projects.

Project Management

  • Act as the project manager during the construction phase, overseeing all aspects of construction work for spring rehabilitation, classrooms, toilets, other school infrastructure, and rainwater harvesting projects.
  • Coordinate and manage contractors, suppliers, and construction teams to ensure timely completion of projects within budget and quality standards.
  • Monitor progress on-site, resolve any issues or delays, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management on the progress of each project.

Technical Expertise

  • Provide expert knowledge and technical input into the design and construction of pit toilets, spring rehabilitation, rainwater roofs and large water tanks, school infrastructure, ensuring structural integrity, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Advise on the best materials, construction methods, and maintenance practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues related to water storage systems during construction or post-construction.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

Ensure that all construction work adheres to the highest standards of quality and complies with the Kenya Building Code, environmental regulations, and water management policies.
Conduct regular inspections and quality checks throughout the construction process to ensure that all work is completed to specification.
Coordinate collection and analyse data from tank meters and cashless kiosk dispensers.

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Collaborate with project water committees, local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that projects are aligned with community needs and County and sub-county water strategies and plans.
  • Provide technical advice and support to local community members and staff to ensure ongoing maintenance and sustainability of the water projects.

Job Competencies (Knowledge, Experience and Attributes / Skills):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Water Resource Engineering, or a related field.
  • A structural engineer with experience in construction of water projects and project management is preferred.
  • Registration with Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) is an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in designing and managing construction projects especially water projects, including rainwater harvesting and spring rehabilitation.
  • Specific knowledge and experience in designing and constructing large water tanks, including material selection, structural design, and installation.
  • Proven experience in project management, including planning, budgeting, and overseeing construction work.
  • Proficiency in creating detailed Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
  • Familiarity with relevant Kenyan water laws and construction regulations.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including contractors, community members, and government agencies.
  • Proficient in the use of design software (e.g., AutoCAD) and project management tools.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving abilities and a commitment to delivering high-quality results.
  • Ability to work in remote areas and under challenging conditions.
